Planting a wide range of
nectar and host plants is the best
strategy for attracting the largest
number of butterfly species. Butterflies
may be attracted to the garden by a
large patch of bright flowers, but they
will linger longer if there are also
areas that provide shelter, water, sun
and a diverse group of plants that
imitate the way plants grow in the wild.
Butterflies prefer visiting flowers such
as Lilies, Coneflowers and Black-Eyed
Susans that provide easy landing
platforms. |
Never use pesticides;
butterflies and their caterpillars may
be killed. Mulch
around all plants, which will lessen the
amount of water that plants need and at
the same time, may provide shelter for
some types of caterpillars.
Plant as many types of
regionally native plants as possible,
while eliminating any plants that are
invasive.
Incorporate large
rocks or gravel areas into gardens to
provide basking spots.
